Take an easy hike through the rainforest and enjoy a culinary treat of local fare at Maracas Beach.
Get picked up from your hotel and travel along the scenic North Coast Road, admiring coastal views and passing popular Maracas and Las Cuevas Bay.
Your trailhead is in a tiny village in the middle of the rainforest. Hike for about an hour, along a flat riverbed, before you arrive at the 100-foot (30-m) waterfall. You can swim in the large pool around the falls, even take a “shower” under the falls. Huge boulders encircle the falls and add brilliance to the already awesome scenery. During the week it is unlikely that we encounter anyone here, so the waterfall is all yours! ☺
On the return trip you get a chance to make stops at quiet Las Cuevas or busy Maracas Beach. Now it’s on to your culinary treat – the ultimate Bake & Shark (cost on own).
In Trinidad, Bake and Shark is widely associated with Maracas Beach, as it features a multitude of bake and shark stands, and the needed fish is caught in the offshore surf. It consists of a fried flatbread (“bake”) filled with crispy pieces of fish and fresh ingredients like lettuce & pineapple – plus some exotic sauces. Enjoy!
