All about the Trinidad: Island Tour – Pitch Lake and Chaguanas Sightseeing Tour.

Discover the lesser-known southern half of Trinidad on this immersive tour that takes you through vibrant markets, historic landmarks, and natural wonders. This tour offers a unique opportunity to explore cultural treasures and marvel at the world’s largest natural asphalt deposit—the famous Pitch Lake.

Your adventure begins with a scenic drive through Central Trinidad, where you’ll pass flat plains and rolling hills. Your first stop is at a lively fresh produce market in Chaguanas, filled with vibrant colors, exotic fruits, and the energetic hustle of local vendors. This is your chance to taste authentic street food like doubles, a popular and flavorful dish made of curried chickpeas served between two rounds of fried dough. Don’t miss the chance to try this Trinidadian favorite!

The next highlight is the world-renowned Pitch Lake, located in the village of La Brea. Spanning over 109 acres and nearly 250 feet deep, this natural deposit of asphalt has been used to pave roads and runways across the globe, including at Buckingham Palace and LaGuardia Airport. A one-hour guided walk takes you across its surreal, elephant-skin-like surface while you learn about the fascinating history of the lake. Discover the Amerindian legend that surrounds its creation, and explore the onsite museum to view ancient artifacts, including tools and carvings from Trinidad’s prehistoric era (according to availability).

For lunch, indulge in an authentic Trinidadian roti, a delicious flatbread wrap filled with curried potatoes, meats, or chickpeas (not included in the cost). Roti is a staple in Trinidad’s East Indian cuisine and a must-try for visitors.

Continuing your journey, visit the awe-inspiring 85-foot-tall statue of Lord Hanuman, the Hindu deity, at the Hanuman Murti Temple in Carapichaima. Admire the statue’s impressive craftsmanship and learn about Trinidad’s rich Hindu culture at the adjoining ashram.

This tour offers a perfect blend of history, culture, and natural beauty, giving you a deeper understanding of Trinidad’s diverse heritage and landscapes.

Additional Information:

Pitch Lake History:
Discovered by Sir Walter Raleigh in 1595, the Pitch Lake has been a source of fascination for centuries. Amerindian legends suggest it was formed as divine punishment after a tribe consumed sacred hummingbirds, believed to be the souls of ancestors. The site has unearthed prehistoric finds, including the remains of a giant sloth and a mastodon tooth, all of which can be viewed at the Pitch Lake Museum.

Trinidad Roti:
A popular meal in Trinidad, roti is a soft, thin flatbread filled with curried meats, potatoes, and chickpeas. With varieties like Dhalpouri, Bus-up-shut, and Paratha, it’s a delicious blend of Trinidad’s East Indian and Caribbean culinary influences.

Doubles:
Don’t leave Trinidad without trying doubles, a beloved street food made of curried chickpeas between two pieces of fried dough (barra). It’s typically served with tangy tamarind sauce, pepper sauce, and other toppings. This quick, flavorful snack is a must-try for any visitor!
